The Journey from Seed to Bloom

The Journey from Seed to Bloom

Hello!

Today, we’re diving into one of my favorite parts of gardening—seed collecting!

The Journey from Seed to Bloom: How I Collect and Preserve Seeds from My Garden

One of the most fulfilling aspects of gardening is the opportunity to collect seeds from my flowers at the end of each season. This simple yet meaningful process allows me to ensure that the same beautiful blooms return year after year.

The journey begins by identifying whether the seeds are annual or perennial. This distinction is important, as it guides how the seeds will grow and the environment they need to flourish. I wait until the flowers have reached the end of their life cycle—when the bloom has faded and withered—before I go out to harvest the seeds. It’s during this final stage of the flower’s growth that the seeds are ready to be collected.

Understanding when to plant your seeds is just as crucial as the collection process. Different flowers have varying growth cycles and seasonal needs. Some seeds thrive when planted in early spring, while others prefer the warmth of summer. Knowing the specific timing for each flower type ensures that they have the best chance to flourish.

By researching the ideal planting times, you can plan your garden more effectively. This helps you avoid planting too early when the frost may still be a threat or too late when the growing season is winding down. Keeping a gardening calendar can be beneficial, marking when to start seeds indoors or when to sow them directly in the ground. This attention to detail can make a significant difference in the health and vibrancy of your blooms the following season. After gathering the seeds, I allow them to dry thoroughly on a piece of paper to ensure they are properly preserved. Once dried, I store them in labeled glass bottles, each marked with the year they were collected. These bottles are then placed in a cool, dark space, as this helps keep the seeds viable and ready for planting in the next growing season.

This process has become a cherished tradition in my gardening routine, connecting me to the cycle of life in the garden and ensuring that each year is filled with new growth.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in our garden journey—I can’t wait to share more with you soon!
